Medical tourism: why the Altai Republic can become a new health resort of Eurasia
As a natural environment, long stays and restoration programs form a world-class product for Altai.
The Altai Republic can sell more than just recreation and a natural experience; its best chance is to become a regeneration area where medical and environmental tourism are combined into one high-end product, and the region already has key reasons for this: a world-class natural base, growing demand for health-care travel, the possibility of a long stay, and the ability to connect a medical program with the environment.
Modern medical tourism can no longer be reduced to a single procedure: There is a growing demand for prevention, recovery from overload, sleep, emotional relief, and longer active ages. The Global Wellness Institute estimates that the health tourism market reached $894 billion in 2024, and the entire welfare economy has grown to $6.8 trillion and continues to expand, which means that the world is increasingly paying not just for treatment, but for a broader recovery model.
This is especially important for Altai because a medical product here can rely not only on the procedure but also on the territory itself: air, water, silence, height and long stay. The World Health Organization directly links the natural environment and human well-being, and in new materials on nature-based solutions, stresses that such approaches simultaneously support the health and sustainability of the environment. For Altai, this is not an external fashion, but the natural logic of the territory.
The special strength of Altai is that the region can develop not just a clinic in a beautiful place, but a health resort of a new type, where treatment, rehabilitation, regime, route, peace, nature and space can work as one system. UNESCO views the Golden Mountains of Altai as a large natural system, not a single point, and this makes the republic especially strong for a long, rather than short stay.
The topic of RDT is particularly important for Altai. It requires precision: it is not about a legend, but about a medical tradition, which is reflected in Russian clinical guidelines. The available legal and medical sources on sarcoidosis do mention fasting and diet therapy as one of the possible methods in certain clinical situations. This does not mean universal application, but means that the region has the right to rely on a real medical school, not on marketing fiction.
Economically, medical tourism is particularly strong because it makes it longer, because you don't come for two days, you come for a program, and it's almost always longer than a regular vacation, and it changes the economy of the entire area, with increased load, increased food, routes, water and bath circuits, additional services, and the likelihood of a revisit, and for the resort region, this is one of the main factors of sustainability.
For the developer and the investor, the conclusion is that medical tourism in Altai is not an additional service for the hotel, but one of the main amplifiers of the entire resort model, it reduces dependence on the short season, makes the project more convincing, transfers it to a higher price segment and increases the value of the surrounding real estate, so the medical core in Altai is not an expense part of the project, but a factor in the capitalization of the territory.
The practical conclusion for the region is also hard: Altai is not enough to say that it is clean air and beautiful mountains. It is a weak pitch. The strong pitch is different: Altai is an area where you can combine the natural environment, the medical program, the long stay and the route into a single product of recovery, and that is how the new health resort of Eurasia emerges.
The main conclusion of this lecture is that the Altai Republic can indeed become the new health resort of Eurasia, but only in one case: if medical tourism develops here not as a separate service, but as a large territorial model, nature, medical support, rehabilitation programs, long stays, route, silence and quality of the environment should work as a whole, then Altai will move from the category of a beautiful tourist region to the category of expensive health and long stay.
